Management of HSV infection in the immunocompromised host with HIV

Genital herpes is a significant opportunistic infection among people co-infected with HIV. Co-infected persons have significantly increased rates of both clinical and subclinical herpes simplex virus (HSV) reactivation when compared with immunocompetent individuals, and are at high risk for developing lesions harbouring virus that is resistant to aciclovir. In this talk, I will review current knowledge on optimal management strategies for HIV-infected persons co-infected with HSV, including recent data on effectiveness of HSV suppression. I will also discuss the gaps that currently exist in our understanding of HSV/HIV co-infection that might influence future management strategies.
