Welcome

Welcome to the information page for the USA. Here you can find details of the American Herpes Foundation (AHF).

Mission Statement

The AHF is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the management of herpesvirus infections. Its mission is to enhance the awareness, understanding and control of herpesvirus infections in the USA by disseminating information and ensuring the exchange of ideas. The AHF is directed by a board of trustees, chaired by Dr Richard J Whitley of the University of Alabama School of Medicine, and composed of nationally recognized experts on herpesvirus infections.

By receiving current information on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of herpesvirus infections, physicians will be better equipped to provide their patients with optimal care.

The goals of the AHF are accomplished through a variety of programmes and media including publications, educational symposia, research awards and grants, and the Internet.

2005 Stephen L. Sacks Investigator Award - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The American Herpes Foundation is calling for applications for the 2005 Stephen L. Sacks Investigator Award, named in honour of the late Stephen L. Sacks.

The Sacks Award aims to recognize and encourage newer investigators (both in the US and internationally) who have completed significant research in the herpesvirus field. Please note that prizes are awarded for work already completed, not for proposed research.

The 2005 Sacks Award Program will distribute two (2) $5,000 cash prizes to investigators-in-training. Their purpose is to:

  • Provide recognition and reward for superior achievement in clinical or basic science research

  • Highlight up-and-coming investigators

  • Identify and reinforce novel practical research in herpesvirus infection

Award Distribution

  • Cash prizes of $5,000 each will be awarded to two (2) winning candidates

  • Sponsored travel to the Awards ceremony (location TBD)

Eligibility Criteria
Eligible candidates include residents and fellows nominated by their department chairs for contributing to the advancement of knowledge in herpesvirus infection. Documentation of the nominees' achievements, including published research and letters of recommendation, is reviewed by a panel of herpesvirus experts.

  • Herpes simplex virus types 1 or 2

  • Cytomegalovirus

  • Varicella zoster virus

CME-certified Publications

The Herpes Monitor

The AHF publishes The Herpes Monitor three times a year. This premier publication on herpesviruses provides healthcare practitioners with practical clinical information to assist them in identifying and managing herpes patients, and includes feature articles reporting on late-breaking news in herpes, upcoming AHF activities, unique or difficult-to-assess case histories, and summaries of international articles for the American physician community. The target audience includes family practice physicians, infectious-disease specialists, obstetricians/gynaecologists and other providers with an interest in herpes. Each issue has a different theme, and newer issues of the publication offer CME and CE credit. The Herpes Monitor may be obtained in print or from our website as a PDF document.
