Slide 20
Contact dermatitis resulting from alternative therapy for recurrent genital herpes

Severe contact dermatitis occurred in this patient who had been diagnosed as having recurrent genital herpes. The patient had consulted a homeopathic therapist who had recommended a garlic poultice. The poultice caused severe contact dermatitis. It must be recognized that the emotional distress and concern that patients have regarding their recurrent genital herpes may lead them to seek alternative therapies. It is important that physicians consider the potential value of these therapies but, wherever possible, strive to participate in trials designed to evaluate their efficacy. It must also be emphasized that some so-called alternative therapies may have side effects and can actually worsen symptoms and signs, as in this case.
