Asymptomatic HSV lesions on the cervical epithelium (Boselli F)

This colposcopy photograph shows a woman with an asymptomatic HSV lesion that appears as a sore on the ectocervix, located within an abnormal transformation zone. In a similar case, [Barton SE et al. Screening to detect asymptomatic shedding of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in women with recurrent genital HSV infection. Genitourinary Medicine 1986; 62:181185] the woman was unaware of any symptoms attributable to HSV at the time, but colposcopy revealed small lesions positive for HSV. These cases illustrate the difficult nature of counselling women regarding the risks of asymptomatic shedding of virus, which is potentially transmissible to a sexual partner.
