Slide 17
Vulval eruptions resulting from Lichen sclerosis

This slide shows a patient who presented to her primary care physician complaining of recurrent vulval soreness, dysuria and redness. She was referred originally to a clinic for STI screening but all tests were proven negative. Consideration of a diagnosis of genital herpes was made as part of the differential diagnosis, but the diagnosis was confirmed on diagnostic biopsy as Lichen sclerosis. Swabs for virus culture were negative. No evidence of vulval intra-epithelial neoplasia was found on biopsy and the patient’s symptoms responded well to the use of an emollient for washing and the use of clobetasol, a highly potent topical steroid.
