Recurrent HSV infection

Slide 12
Perioral lesions in a patient infected with HSV-2

The facial blistering evident in this patient is due to recurrent HSV-2 infection. Initially, this patient had been infected simultaneously by HSV-2 in her genital and perioral regions. Despite having no anogenital recurrences she was subsequently troubled by recurrences of facial lesions every 24 weeks. The facial pain associated with these lesions was pronounced, and the cosmetic disfigurement extreme. A diagnosis was made by virus culture. Investigation of the patient’s immune function by testing for HIV antibody, with the patient’s consent, is essential. In this case, the patient had normal immune function and has responded to suppressive antiviral therapy.
