Recurrent HSV infection

Slide 11
Superficial ulceration in recurrent HSV-2 infection

In this patient with anogenital HSV recurrence, the lesions are small, moist, superficial ulcers, which were painful and itchy. Virus culture confirmed HSV-2. The patient had not had any prodromal symptoms whatsoever, hence episodic therapy would be of little value in such a patient. If lesions are distressing psychologically or physically to the patient, or if they occur frequently, then strong consideration must be given to the provision of prophylactic antiviral therapy. Perianal lesions can be extremely painful and are associated with radiating pains of the buttocks, which make it difficult for the patient to sit down comfortably and, therefore, can interfere with their work and daily activities.
