The microbial threat and globalization: a worldwide perspective

Presented by D Buriot, WHO Department of Communicable Diseases Surveillance and Response, 58 Avenue Debourg, Lyon, France

Globalization of travel and trade has increased the threat of diseases, including infectious diseases, spreading internationally. This presentation gives examples of global outbreaks, and assesses other factors (including microbial adaptation and change, and breakdown of public health measures) which facilitate the spread of disease. Health security and bioterrorism are worldwide concerns, and the presentation includes information on how such threats are tackled by WHO and other institutions, to optimize the response to global health threats.
