The International Herpes Management Forum (IHMF®) was established in 1993 to improve the awareness and understanding of herpesviruses, and the counselling and management of people with these infections.

Three supplements to the Herpes Journal:

Global Epidemiology of Genital Herpes and the Interaction of Herpes Simplex Virus with HIV

This supplement represents the combined experience and knowledge of the many physicians and healthcare professionals associated with the IHMF®. It provides the most comprehensive coverage yet available of the epidemiology of genital herpes infections in developed and developing countries, and also clearly explains the interaction between HSV-2 and HIV.

The articles in this supplement  were developed from presentations and discussions at IHMF® Workshop Meetings held in San Diego (September 2002) and Seattle (May 2002). The recommendations they contain were ratified at the IHMF® Annual Meeting held in Paris (February 2003).

Herpesvirus Infections of the CNS

This supplement reviews our current understanding of central nervous system (CNS) disorders, and provides recommendations for diagnosis and management of infections caused by viruses of the herpesviridae family.

The articles are based on presentations and discussions held at the IHMF® Management Strategies Workshop in April 2002 in Denver, USA. Recommendations from this workshop were discussed and ratified at the 10th Annual Meeting of the IHMF® in FebruaryMarch 2003.

Strategies for Interrupting the Transmission of Genital and Neonatal HSV Infection

This supplement considers factors that influence the transmission of HSV-2, and interventions that reduce transmission rates and disease burden. Topics considered include asymptomatic viral shedding, the role of condoms and microbicides, educational interventions, episodic and suppressive antiviral therapy, vaccines and neonatal herpes.

The articles in this supplement  were developed from presentations and discussions at IHMF® Workshop Meetings held in San Diego (September 2002) and Seattle (May 2002). The recommendations within them were ratified at the 10th Annual Meeting of the IHMF® in FebruaryMarch 2003.

HERPES 11.3

This, the biggest ever edition of Herpes journal, includes several papers generated following this year’s IHMF® meeting, including consensus articles on the latest IHMF® management recommendations. Recommendations in 'Management of CMV Disease in Transplant Patients' promote the diagnosis and management of CMV infection and disease in solid organ and haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients. 'Treating and Preventing HSV in the HIV-Infected Host', provides practical guidance for the clinician.

This issue of Herpes includes articles exploring:

  • Psychosocial Issues in Genital Herpes Management
  • Supporting the Patient with Genital HSV Infection
  • Is Viral Shedding a Surrogate Marker for Transmission of Genital Herpes?

Next there is a discursive article based on the IHMF® Annual Meeting plenary debate, on whether viral shedding can now be considered as a surrogate marker for genital herpes transmission. While the concept linking HSV shedding to transmission is plausible, the pathway between the concept and the reality of surrogacy is complex and there is currently a paucity of data supporting shedding as a surrogate marker.

Finally, this issue of Herpes features two papers that focus on psychological issues in genital herpes management. One paper looks at the difficulties facing people with genital herpes and those who are managing their care; the second provides practical guidance on issues such as how to organize counselling and support people with genital herpes, or how to inform a person about practicalities of diagnosis or HSV transmission.

11th Annual Meeting of the IHMF®

The 11th Annual Meeting of the IHMF® was held from 27 to 29 February 2004 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The 11th Annual Meeting of the IHMF® was a great success and achieved its aim of being an exciting platform for debate and exchange of information. The meeting produced new guidelines for managing both CMV disease in transplant patients, and HSV infection in the HIV-infected patient; the guidelines on CMV disease have been published in Herpes 11.3. Guidelines on HSV infection in the HIV-infected patient will appear in Herpes 12.1.  The Annual Meeting also featured a number of keynote sessions and an entertaining and informative debate.

The IHMF® would like to thank all the delegates and faculty at the meeting for ther contributions to making the event a success and thank the sponsoring companies (GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, Roche, Focus Technologies, Biotrin and Uniprom) for their support of the meeting.

PowerPoint presentations from the meeting are available through accessing the IHMF® Activities menu bar on the homepage.  Abstracts of the oral and poster presentations at this meeting are also available in Herpes Journal Volume 11, issue 1
